Think of Malta and you’ll probably imagine package tours and elderly tourists ambling around, which is a crying shame really because this small country – made up of three tiny islands – has so much more to offer with culture, weather and good food to rival that of its closest neighbour Italy.

Malta’s picturesque capital Valletta is a UNESCO Heritage site with lots to see and do within its 16th and 17th Century bastian walls. It’ll only take you an afternoon to wander around its narrow, steep streets which feature colourful wooden gallanjis (closed balconies) and sandy limestone buildings. You can glimpse the sea from most places in the city.

A great day trip is Mdina, the old capital. Nicknamed the Silent City, this is a medieval walled town which dominates the landscape. Rabat, the suburb outside of Mdina is also worth checking out especially St Paul’s Catacombs – the largest catacombs in Malta. It’s a spooky look at the seven various types of tombs used by Romans.

Head south to the pretty harbour of Marsaxlokk for its daily market. After snagging some bargains, you can try out one of its many restaurants famed for fresh fish – bring an empty stomach!

The second biggest island Gozo is a great place for a day trip or a few days if you can spare it. It’s much quieter, more rural and laid back than Malta. It’s a great place for nature lovers. Take the ferry from Cirkewwa which only takes 15 to 20 minutes and arrive at Mgarr.

Dwerja is home to what is known as the Azure window – a rock formation which looks like a rocky picture frame for that ideal holiday snap.

Ramala Bay and its red sandy beach is a great place for a dip too but it’s the Ta Cenc cliffs which are a definite must see. From there you can take leisurely hikes while confronted by the spectacular views of the sea and the cliffs below although take care not to get too close.Marsaxlokk Bay, MaltaHead to Marsaxlokk Bay for fresh fish (Picture: Alamy)

What we didn’t like

Coming over from the UK, Malta – which was under British rule until 1964 – can seem like an identikit England with HSBC, M&S, Dorothy Perkins and Peacocks dominating the shopping centres. You’ll also spot our old bendy buses on the road with the oyster card readers taped over.

And as pretty as it is, Valletta doesn’t really have a nightlife. After 5pm everything shuts down and the streets are pretty deserted. Head to Sliema and St Julian’s for bars and clubs.Paradise Bay, Cirkewwa, MaltaMalta has some great beaches (Picture: Alamy)

Where to stay

For old school glamour, the 5 star Phoenicia Hotel is a great choice located very handily by the bus station. In what once used to be an old courtyard, it’s now home to a 1930s style hotel which has a very pretty garden and swimming pool overlooking the city surrounded by Valletta’s imposing walls.

If you fancy something more slick, the modern Palace hotel is in Sliema. A relatively new designer hotel, it has a boutique feel to it with a spa, indoor pool and stunning ninth floor infinity pool. It’s located near Bizassa Street, one of the main shopping streets of Sliema.

In Gozo, Hotel Ta Cenc is a stunning 5 star hotel which is the perfect getaway for nature enthusiasts. It has awe-inspiring views out onto the cliffs which are just on their doorstep and the hotel itself is tastefully built into the
stone landscape. It’s just a short walk to the many rocky pathways that lead you all around the countryside.

Stay at Phoenicia Hotel from just APS120 per room per night, based on two sharing a Classic Room for a three-night stay, valid for advance bookings online. To book call 0800 862 0025 or visit www.phoeniciamalta.com

After splashing out over APS1,000 to take his girlfriend on a luxury holiday to Malta, music teacher Tom Frankenburg has decided to give it away for free after the pair split up.

The 22-year-old revealed his plans on video-sharing website YouTube where he uploaded a clip explaining the reasons behind his decision.

‘I had this holiday that I couldn’t go on. I couldn’t sell it. I couldn’t get a refund. I was pretty stuck,’ revealed Mr Frankenburg, who lives in Nottingham.

‘I’m spreading this message of taking control of your life. If things go badly it’s not the end of the world.

‘I genuinely want to get rid of this holiday and after a lot of thought, I thought this would be the best way to do it.

‘It’s going to be an interesting experience, something I’ll remember forever and I think it’s going to be fun.’Tom Frankenburg, YouTubeTom Frankenburg hopes to inspire others to make a change (Picture: YouTube/ singalongwithtom)

The clip, entitled ‘Tom Goes Crazy and Gives His Holiday Away’ now looks set to go viral after racking up thousands of online hits in a matter of days.

Frankenburg has encouraged anyone interested in going on the trip, which includes flights, four-star accommodation and car hire, to e-mail him or post a video response explaining why they should be given the chance to go on the trip.

He said he hopes his act of kindness can inspire others to do something similar.

‘Obviously I canat fix everything but I can fix it a little bit and hopefully this video will inspire you to do the same, even if itas just a little thing,’ he said.

‘Like sitting next to that lonely kid at school or buying a homeless person a sandwich for lunch on the streets.

‘It all counts and together we can make this place a better place to live in.’
