US litigation specialist Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan has set out ambitious plans to expand across Asia and Europe. The firm has earmarked Germany, Switzerland and Singapore for office launches within the next two years, with an office in Hong Kong planned for a later date. Germany, where Quinn Emanuel launched a two-partner office in Mannheim in 2010, is expected to gain two new bases, with an opening in Hamburg expected imminently and a launch in Munich expected before the end of the year.

Wragge & Co has set out plans to significantly bulk up its presence in Germany through a merger or large team hire, as the national firm targets a full service offering in the country. The UK top 30 law firm, which currently has a two-partner intellectual property team in Munich, is looking to build up its Germany presence to around the size of its Paris office, which has 42 lawyers, including 12 partners, and turnover of £12m.

Herbert Smith has set out details of its international expansion plans, with the City law firm hoping to open three offices in Germany in addition to a base in New York in the wake of its failed merger bid with former European alliance partners Gleiss Lutz and Stibbe in November last year. The firm has appointed London corporate managing partner Patrick Mitchell and City corporate partner Alan Montgomery to head a committee dealing with its launch in Germany, where it hopes to open in Frankfurt, Duesseldorf and Munich.

CMS Hasche Sigle has overtaken Hengeler Mueller to emerge as the largest German law firm by revenue, with the 10 largest firms in the country seeing an average revenue rise of 4% during their last financial year, according to new research. The rankings, compiled by German legal publication Juve, show Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer retaining its position as the largest law firm in Germany with turnover of €334m (£286m), while CMS Hasche Sigle has passed Slaughter and May ally Hengeler with 3.9% revenue growth to rank second with revenues of €212m (£182m).
