The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme has issued a call for fellowships for the 2013-2014 academic year.

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young Doctoral level students and researchers from all countries and from all academic fields. Neither studies at Masteras level nor post-doctoral studies are supported in the programme. The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 900-1200 euros (in 2011). The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by CIMO.

CIMO Fellowship program supports young researchers to travel to Finnish universities. The objective is to encourage academic mobility to Finland and to promote international cooperation in research and teaching.

The Finnish Cultural Foundation awards grants for promoting and developing culture and economy in Finland. In accordance with this task the foundation makes personal grants to individuals and groups

The High Court has ruled that several UK ISPs including Sky, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media must censor The Pirate Bay website. This means that millions of Internet users will be prevented from accessing the popular BitTorrent site in the weeks to come. The Pirate Bay say they aren’t concerned by yet another court-ordered blockade, and point out that there are plenty of ways to circumvent such censorship.

In most stockmarkets, the ten biggest companies account for a significant slice of total market capitalisation. In both Finland and Switzerland, their share is over 80%. In Finland, a single company, Nokia, which makes mobile phones, weighs in at 66% of the total. Besides Finland, only in Switzerland and the Netherlands does one company account for at least 20% of the stockmarket. Bigger markets tend to be less concentrated: Americaas biggest company, General Electric, makes up only 2.7% of its stockmarket. Concentration has declined in several countries as the value of telecoms companies, often the biggest in a market, has fallen. A year ago, five countries in our chart had a top-ten share of over 60%. Now only three do.
